Baqi... was born... in Berkeley, CA 1973... to a French mother and a Bronx born dad. The 2 of 3 child... he was raised in the High Sierras of California, upstate New York, Santa Fe, NM and Los Angeles. Need we say more?
After graduating... L.A. County High School for the Arts, Baqi was awarded... the Presidential Visual Arts Scholarship and he studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. There... he had a taste... the artist’s life. He worked three jobs to pay for school, a miserable basement apartment and a meager diet of black beans. Not a bad life... though Baqi soon realized... it was the life of another artist... in another time.
Truly a child of his times... hooked on movies... he returned to Los Angeles. Like a moth to the flame... he was beckoned by the bright lights of Hollyood. He worked for fifteen years.... as a Lighting Director and Director of Photography... with plenty of other jobs in the mix... as you might well imagine. He worked on countless projects... big budget, independent, commercial... and just plain silly.
Baqi developed a reputation for being a bit eccentric... yet likable, talented, and professional. He did well. He earned a good living and amassed a treasure trove of interesting tales to tell. He enjoyed driving his convertible sports car... through the Hollywood Hills... and gazing out onto the lights of the valley... from his home in Studio City. It felt like a dream... it was.... and how true... that dreams shift shape. They change form. Instinct and desire grow... in new directions.
One day... he awoke from the most delicious of fantasies... and looked out his little plane window. He gazed down upon the valley below... and could not imagine why he had chosen to live there. He moved with his family* to a beautiful coastal town in Northern California.
Provoked by the quiet power of the redwoods... and enraptured by the seductive sounds of the sea... Baqi’s roots emerged... from beneath the surface.
